Tuskegee Airman Visits WHF
The Warbird Heritage Foundation was honored to have Mr. David James, one of the Tuskegee Airmen, visit our facility on May 26, 2012. Mr. James was a P-51 Mustang fighter pilot who flew more than 60 combat missions during World War II. He was a member of the 332nd Fighter Group of the Fifteenth Air Force based at Ramitelli, Italy.
The 332nd Fighter Group received a Unit Citation for "Outstanding performance of duty in armed conflict with the enemy" while providing fighter escort for a B-17 bombing raid on the Daimler-Benz tank factory at Berlin on March 24, 1945. Then Lt. David James flew as part of that escort. The Unit Citation is shown below. Also shown below is an 11 page detailed report on this complex bombing raid.
After having flown one in combat, this was the first time in 66 years that Mr. James had been up close to a P-51!
Mr. James is the subject of the article featured on the cover of the July/August 2012 edition of the local magazine: Quintessential New Trier - "Tuskegee Airman David James - The Story of an American Hero". Read more on the Tuskegee Airmen.
